EPREL Upgrade: GTIN Integration Boosts Digital Labelling Efficiency

The European Commission has announced a significant revamp of the EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) database, set to go live in early 2025. This upgrade will enhance the way energy-labelled products are registered and made accessible across the EU.

EPREL plays a central role in supporting the EU energy labelling framework, helping consumers make informed decisions and enabling market surveillance authorities to track compliance.

What’s changing?

The upcoming revamp will:

  • EPREL now supports search also using Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs).
  • Introduce a more user-friendly interface for suppliers and public users
  • Improve data quality, accessibility, and security
  • Support new product groups and evolving regulatory requirements
  • Lay the groundwork for integration with digital tools like the Digital Product Passport (DPP)

Why does it matter?

The Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) are now included in the EPREL database. For many products, however, the GTIN is not yet provided. So manufacturers, authorised representatives and importers should add the GTIN to their product information in the EPREL database. The GTIN is searchable on the public EPREL public website.

For manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers, this update means better digital infrastructure for energy labelling compliance. For consumers and stakeholders, it means clearer, more transparent access to energy performance data.
