Deforestation Regulation using GS1 Standards (EUDR)

Supporting Compliance with the EU’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

The European Union’s Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) is set to reshape how companies manage their supply chains. Our white paper is designed to help businesses efficiently address the challenges posed by this regulation through the effective use of GS1 standards and services.

What is EUDR? Adopted in 2023 as part of the EU Green Deal, EUDR ensures that products placed on the EU market are not linked to deforestation, within or outside the EU. Companies must prove their products come from land free of deforestation since December 31, 2020, comply with local laws, and provide geolocation data on the agricultural land used in production.

The regulation supports the EU’s climate and biodiversity goals, and is scheduled to take effect on December 30, 2026, following a proposed one-year postponement.

How Can GS1 Standards Help? GS1 standards bridge the physical-to-digital gap that’s essential for EUDR due diligence.

They enable traceability at scale and make EUDR data sharing seamless, through established GS1 standards including the GS1 Web Vocabulary, GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network), EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), and EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services).

This gives companies a reliable foundation to:

  • Prove origin at scale — connect products to verified geolocation and sourcing data across every tier of the supply chain
  • Share compliance data seamlessly — exchange due diligence information between suppliers, traders, and authorities using established, interoperable data standards
  • Build on existing infrastructure — leverage GS1 identification and data-sharing standards already in use across the supply chain, rather than building EUDR compliance from scratch

GS1 in Europe EUDR questionnaire

The questionnaire helps verify the compliance of an upstream operator or trader under EUDR. Its answers help establish whether due diligence on the relevant products was already exercised by the upstream supplier, as required under Article 4(9) EUDR, allowing the company to reference the supplier’s previous due diligence statement.

The questionnaire does not perform risk evaluation itself; that analysis remains the responsibility of each company. It’s recommended to integrate the questions into an IT tool for automated analysis and a clear question flow.
