Deforestation Regulation using GS1 Standards

Supporting Compliance with the EU’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

The European Union’s Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) is set to reshape how companies manage their supply chains. Our white paper is designed to help businesses efficiently address the challenges posed by this regulation through the effective use of GS1 standards and services.

What is EUDR? Adopted in 2023 as part of the EU Green Deal, EUDR aims to ensure that products placed on the EU market are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation, whether within or outside the EU. To achieve this, companies will be required to collect and report detailed data on specific products and commodities identified as major contributors to global deforestation. This includes tracking information about farmers, land plots, and shipments, as well as connecting them to verified data regarding their origin. The regulation mandates that companies provide evidence that their products are sourced from land that has not been subject to deforestation after December 31, 2020, and that all relevant local laws are followed. Additionally, geographical data on agricultural land used for producing raw materials must be provided.

EUDR supports the EU’s commitment to combating climate change and preserving biodiversity, areas significantly impacted by deforestation. The regulation is scheduled to come into effect on December 30, 2025, following a proposed one-year postponement by the European Commission.

GS1 in Europe EUDR questionnaire

The aim of the questionnaire is compliance verification of the respective upstream operator or trader in accordance with the EUDR (supplier compliance verification). The answers in the questionnaire are used to ascertain “that the due diligence relating to the relevant products contained in or made from the relevant products was exercised” by the upstream supplier according to Article 4 (9) EUDR. If this can be ascertained, the companies may refer to a previous due diligence statement submitted by said supplier. The aim of the questionnaire is not to perform the actual evaluation of the risk. This is to be done during the evaluation and analysis by the respective company. It is recommended to include the questions in an IT tool to enable automated analysis and to make the flow of questions clear.
