GS1 welcomes the launch of the European Commission’s Digital Product Passport (DPP) Registry, together with a dedicated testing environment and helpdesk, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of the Digital Product Passport across the European Union.
The new Registry will support products covered by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), including textile apparel, steel and aluminium, tyres, furniture, ICT products, and energy-related products. It will also support additional product categories covered by other EU legislation requiring Digital Product Passports, such as certain batteries, construction products, toys, detergents, and end-user surfactants.
The DPP Registry provides a secure infrastructure that enables economic operators to register Digital Product Passports, including unique product identifiers and associated metadata. Product information itself will remain decentralised and hosted by manufacturers or authorised DPP service providers, ensuring flexibility while supporting interoperability across the EU market.
As part of this initial release, businesses can already access the following via the newly launched Digital Product Passport website:
- The Digital Product Passport Registry
- A dedicated testing environment
- A specialised helpdesk
- Technical guidance and documentation
- The latest news and webinars on DPP implementation
At this stage, enrolment of economic operators is supported through qualified electronic signatures or qualified electronic seals. The Commission’s next priority is to implement the data model and semantic definitions for battery Digital Product Passports, enabling the completion of the registration process for this product category.
The launch of these services represents an important step towards helping businesses prepare for the upcoming Digital Product Passport requirements. Companies are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the available tools and technical guidance to support a smooth transition as implementation progresses.
